Understanding Ayurvedic Detoxification Procedures

The traditional medicine of India, called Ayurveda, includes a recommendation for seasonal detoxification and purification. This is accomplished through a process that's called panchakarma.

The Basics

Those wondering "what is panchakarma" should know that this word means the five treatments. These five treatments include Vamana, Virechana, Basti, Nasya and Rakt Mokshana and are meant to eliminate any toxins that may be present in the body. These toxins are thought to be responsible for many illnesses, so removing them is said to be beneficial to health. The film james bond spectre research is still preliminary and conflicting on whether these treatments actually provide the stated benefits, however, and people should only get the treatment from qualified professionals.

Preparation

Before starting these detoxification film james bond spectre, patients are typically asked to follow a special diet. This diet usually involves a lot of oil and ghee, only eating at certain times and drinking hot water. Sometimes foods are restricted to ones that are particularly easy to digest but still rich in protein. Massages with oil are used to help prepare the body for the treatments, and sometimes people are given a steam bath as well. Both of these are meant to help loosen any toxins lodged in the tissues and move them toward the colon for elimination.

Vamana

This is a type of emesis therapy. Emesis is another word for vomiting. It's meant to help mobilize and get rid of any toxins that might be in the respiratory tract. It's brought about by eating certain foods (including salt, yogurt and rice) and then applying steam to the back and chest. This is followed by a drink made of madananaphalam, licorice and honey, but if this doesn't cause vomiting, the tongue is rubbed until the patient vomits between 4 and 8 times.

Virechana

Virechana means purgation therapy and usually takes place about three days after Vamana. It's designed to cause any toxins to be flushed out through the use of an herbal laxative. Various items can be used as part of the laxative preparation, including castor oil, flax seed, cow's milk, bran and husk. The aim is to totally cleanse the digestive tract.

Niruha Basti or Anuvasana Basti

The Basti treatment involves the use of colonic irrigation using a medicated oil. It's thought to clean out the colon and improve its muscle tone.

Nasya

This is a process that involves cleaning out the nasal passages by administering a medicated oil through the nose. The patient inhales the drops of oil containing the medication.

Rakt Mokshana

Many Ayurvedic clinics don't perform Rakt Mokshana due to the risks involved. This is a bloodletting treatment. It's sometimes done using leeches.
